Ode to Hawaii: Hawaii Girls in the National Spotlight (Part 1)

June 2, 2010

Like how we like to claim Barack Obama as our own, it’s natural for every town, city, or country, to feel kinship and pride of any of their countrymen or women achieving great success. Hawaii is no different. Indeed, the obstacles appear far greater as Hawaii is an island in the Pacific Ocean, the 50th state of the USA, and culturally diverse where stereotypes and generalities can emerge. Yet, professional athletes, actors, models, businesspeople, musicians, and scores of others have reached national and international success. I want to celebrate it. I also want to share the paradise I live in. And nothing seems more appropriate than to celebrate Maui girl, model (she is also the face of Billabong, too), and surfer Tori Praver, who has a featured photo spread in this month’s Marie Claire magazine. The layout captures the ethereal, yet active energy of our lifestyle; the fashion what we should all aspire to. And thanks to Marie Claire for setting an example of authenticity from the inside out. Now, that’s style.

THEY’RE BACK! Humpback whale season in Hawaii!

Spotted a couple of humpback whales at Diamond Head breaching and exuberantly playing with one another. What an absolute delight! It was not my first encounter as I also saw them (and a pod of dolphins, turtles, and fish) up close off the Waianae coast, where the waters are usually glassy. They’re massive and awe-inspiring creatures. It never gets old. Check this website for more info on whale watching tours in Hawaii! Enjoy!

FOR A GOOD CAUSE…HAWAII’S WILLIE K IN CONCERT ON DECEMBER 14th

Willie K, a well-known Hawaiian contemporary artist

I love concerts, but when it is up close and personal it is even more fun. So when my cousin told me about a benefit for the Hawaii’s Lupus Foundation, which Willie K will be giving a concert for, I wanted to go. (Here is a sample of Willie K’s songs). Not to mention, my cousin’s daughter, Haley Kagimoto, a talented and aspiring actress and singer who has participated in many local productions, will be singing a few songs too.  The benefit will be held at the intimate setting of the Diamond Head Theatre, a venue for many of Hawaii’s local theatre productions where parking is easily accessible and a food and wine reception will be held for benefit goers who want to sit and mingle before the concert. A wonderful way to start the holiday season!

Here is the info:

What is Lupus?

Lupus is a widespread and chronic (lifelong) autoimmune disease that, for unknown reasons, causes the immune system to attack the body’s own tissue and organs, including the joints, kidneys, heart, lungs, brain, blood, or skin. There is no cure for lupus.

Approximately 10,000 people in Hawai`i are affected by lupus.  Although lupus can affect males and females of all ages, it most often develops in females between the ages of 15 and 44.  Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, Asians, African Americans, Hispanics, Latinos, and Native Americans have an increased incidence of lupus compared to other populations.

About Lupus Hawai`i

For the past 35 years, Lupus Hawai`i has been serving our islands by providing awareness, education and support services. It is our mission to improve the diagnosis and treatment of lupus, support individuals and families affected by the disease, increase awareness of lupus among health professionals and the public, and find the causes and cure.

Hope to see you there!

KITE SURFING AROUND HAWAII

September 15, 2009

I am learning to kite surf and it is not easy. I have bruises and scrapes, but I am not complaining!! In the process, I not only learn a new and fun sport, but I feed off a new challenge. Learning takes me out of my comfort zone. And like an infant learning to walk, I also go through an awkward stage looking like a fool but you have to keep trying, keep practicing, especially if you want to get better and feel more comfortable. And I have, but of course, I still need to practice!! Many people on the beach are so encouraging and my frustrations can mount when you are depending on mother nature to have wind!! No wind; no kiting practice. Oh well, patience is another lesson to be learned. Practice and repetition are my keys; others may be more naturally inclined so they may not need it. Whatever it is, I do not want to stop learning new things. Anyway, I want to share with you some photos of  kiting spots around Hawaii and some very talented kiters as well!!

SM ROAD TRIP: July 4th Fireworks in Hawaii Kai, on the Island of Oahu

July 10, 2009

Fireworks signify a celebration; a bold punctuation in the sky.  We stare up in the night sky to witness brilliance, rockets of light and color streaming, making its visual imprint on our minds. Is it the magnitude of the noise, the danger of beautiful light, or the holiday or event it celebrates that wakes us up from our stupor to place such emphasis on seeing fireworks? Whatever the case, I want –but can I have it?– fireworks all the time. Well, I have these photos by my friend and talented photographer Jen Chung to remind me of the festive celebration in gorgeous Hawaii Kai (home of amazing scenic look outs, Roy’s restaurant, Hanauma Bay and Sandy Beach.)

Keep Celebrating!!

ONLY IN HAWAII…RARE PHOTOGRAPHS OF COCO CHANEL BY DOUGLAS KIRKLAND

May 19, 2009

Lifestyle drives me. Only in beautiful Hawaii can I emerge from a water session at Diamond Head, sun-kissed and invigorated, to the opulence and timeless luxury of the Chanel store in Waikiki. Without missing a beat, my friend Stuart gave me a personal tour of the rare photographic images being exhibited of the legendary fashion icon, Coco Chanel. It’s only in Hawaii that the Waikiki store is celebrating its 25th Anniversary and has an exclusive exhibition of photographs of Mademoiselle Chanel. It’s only in Hawaii that these rare photographs can be purchased and 10% of the proceeds will be donated to the Hawaii Children’s Cancer Foundation. However, the most intriguing and captivating feeling of these photographs by Douglas Kirkland, taken in 1962 as he shadowed her for three weeks in Paris, is having a glimpse of her lifestyle.  Besides the fashion, which is timeless, elegant, and just breathtaking, the photographs capture her incredible talent, her classic elegance, and her personality. It breathes life into her collections highlighting her quest for detail and her legendary style of the strands of pearls, the tweed suit, and the little black dress. This is an exhibition not to be missed.
